New Digger ad urges viewers to "decide for yourself" whether it's a ponderous, overinflated mess
Warner Bros. cites online influencers' opinions for its pre-release ad for the Tom-Cruise-starring apocalyptic dark comedy.
Trying to get ahead of what’s turning out to be a near-unanimous “no thanks” from professional critics, studio Warner Bros. is airing a new ad urging viewers “decide for yourself.” The ad displays quotes from the social media accounts of what Variety calls early-access “film influencers” (mostly on Twitter/X) expressing divergent views of the Tom Cruise-starring film from director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu.
With mirror image pairs of posters’ comments (“masterpiece” vs. “unpleasant,” “baffling” vs. “brilliant”), the ad’s tone is set by a clip of Cruise’s aged-up oil tycoon “Digger” Rockwell snapping, “Fuck those people.” As movie scenes flash by, the contradictory opinions continue, with “very goofy” vying with “excellent,” in the sort of eye-straining, rapid-fire experience designed to leave viewers both confused and intrigued.
