It may not be immediately obvious—possibly because you, personally, are not a Chinese filmgoer, because, holy shit, does China like Zootopia movies—but Zootopia, at just two installments, has become one of Disney’s go-to money-making franchises in recent years. In fact, last year’s Zootopia 2 was the second-biggest global box office hit of 2025 overall (beaten only by Ne Zha 2, an even more massive success with Chinese animation fans), bringing in an eventual $1.87 billion. So it’s not entirely shocking that Disney might carve out a little time at this weekend’s D23 event to confirm that, yes, it still likes making huge amounts of money, and has officially green-lit a Zootopia 3.
Details about the film are close to nil at this point, of course, but the company did have stars Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan (who joined the series with its second installment) show up to announce the news to fans. (Jason Bateman wasn’t there, but it’d be pretty wild, no pun intended, to imagine Disney trying to go forward with a third film without him, especially given all the ‘shipper bait for the Judy and Nick obsessives it loaded into the sequel.) Also, this latest movie will apparently be about birds, which should only help complicate the endless online debates about which animals in this universe are allowed to be sentient (and, thus, non-edible), and which are stuck as permanent, unthinking foodstuffs for others.
While Disney was in a money-printing mood on Friday night, it also let fly a few more details about the already announced Frozen 3, although it was honestly pretty slim pickings: Anyone wondering whether Josh Gad’s snowman Olaf would finally get a love interest of his own was in luck, while the company also confirmed that the film would see Kristen Bell’s Anna and Jonathan Groff’s Kristoff finally tie the knot. Will the introduction of a new villain complicate all this love in the air in the world of Arendelle? Yes, obviously, because that’s how movie plots work.
