DVD/BD Release List – 4/26/11

The BBC/Discovery nature-doc factory continues to pump out a high-quality product with Human Planet, a mini-series that considers the junctures where man and nature intersect. Carved into easily digestible vignettes, Human Planet is dramatic and awe-inspiring and as worthy of a look as anything else on this week’s list. And that’s saying something, because there’s a lot to like this week. Criterion’s superb edition of Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas comes to Blu-ray, as does a magnificent Criterion Blu-ray of Blow Out (complete with an hourlong Brian De Palma interview conducted by Noah Baumbach, a 30-minute chat with the always-delightful Nancy Allen, and the entirety of De Palma’s very weird debut feature Murder A La Mod). Also new to Blu-ray: Alejandro Jodorowsky’s ‘70s midnight movie classics El Topo and The Holy Mountain, and the excellent early ‘60s Bob Dylan docs Don’t Look Back and The Other Side Of The Mirror. Finally, once music buffs have digested the Dylanalia, there’s the second season of the Elvis Costello talk show Spectacle to get to, noteworthy for its two-part Bruce Springsteen interview.
