DVD Release List – 10/07/08
New music isn't the only media to be released on Tuesdays; it's unveiling day for new DVDs as well…
It's a great week for current cult favorite TV series, with the most recent seasons of 30 Rock, How I Met Your Mother and Brotherhood arriving, along with sets of Robot Chicken, The Simpsons and South Park for those who prefer their cult TV in cartoon form. And speaking of cartoons, the Disney classic Sleeping Beauty makes its Blu-Ray debut, on a disc loaded with innovative features (from picture-in-picture commentary to interactive on-line content); and the much-admired animated adaptation of Richard Adams' Watership Down returns to DVD in a new edition with nearly an hour of behind-the-scenes featurettes. On the arthouse side of the aisle, Gus Van Sant's lyrical teen angst riff Paranoid Park is available on a bare-bones disc, while the surprisingly moving indie hit The Visitor comes with a sweet-natured commentary by writer-director Tom McCarthy and his surely-Oscar-nomination-bound star Richard Jenkins. Fans of classic cinema should rejoice in new editions of Orson Welles' Touch Of Evil and Nathan Juran and Ray Harryhausen's The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad. Finally, just in time for Halloween, Rob Zombie's remake of John Carpenter's horror classic Halloween has been re-released in a new set that includes an extended cut of the film plus a four-hour (!) making-of documentary.
