DVD Release List – 10/14/08

New music isn't the only media to be released on Tuesdays; it's unveiling day for new DVDs as well…
Though Christmas is a few months away, this week we get a visit from The Ghosts Of Oscar-Bait Past. If you could go back in time, would you spend more time with Richard Attenborough's biopic Chaplin? (And if you did, would that spare Robert Downey, Jr. years of self-destructive drug abuse? And would that cost us his comeback performance in Iron Man? So many moral dilemmas with time-traveling.) After you see the new 170-minute cut of The New World, will you wish that Terrence Malick had stuck to his guns and released this version the first time around? (Rather than the 150- and 135-minute cuts that appeared back in '05 and '06?) On the decidedly non-Oscar-bait side, Lionsgate's "Ghost House Underground" imprint invites you to check out eight new titles from horror's New Wave, while drive-in mavens have their pick of vintage gothica (the "Hammer Films Icons Of Horror Collection"), '80s trash (Navarre's "Exploitation Cinema" series, featuring Mausoleum and Blood Song), '70s trash disguised as high-toned adventure (the kitschy "what if we faked the moon landing?" thriller Capricorn One) and '00s trash disguised as blockbuster "fun" ( Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull). Finally, alt-rock-addled parents looking for a non-annoying video to put on for their kids should rejoice now that the four-episode collection Yo Gabba Gabba: Dance Dance Bunch has arrived. There's a party on my TV!
