Picking up where her grandfather, Elia Kazan, left off, Zoe Kazan is cracking open her copy of John Steinbeck’s East Of Eden and stretching it to miniseries length. The latest adaptation of Steinbeck’s magnum opus, a seven-part Netflix series created by Kazan, arrives next month, which makes today the perfect day to drop a trailer and, boy, does it get muddy fast.
Executive producer Florence Pugh stars as the morally bankrupt Cathy, building on 2026’s list of complicated Cathys that began with Wuthering Heights, another story about depravity and multigenerational trauma. Here, Cathy seemingly falls out of the sky and into the mud, turning her sights on an idealistic farmer, Adam Trask (Christopher Abbott), whom she marries out of convenience, to the dismay of his brother (Mike Feist). That is until she opens the wildest brothel this side of the Mississippi. The series co-stars Hoon Lee, Joseph Zada, Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, Joe Anders, and Ciarán Hinds.
Kazan, who co-showruns with Jeb Stuart, has been working on East Of Eden since 2024. Her version is said to focus more closely on Cathy than her grandfather’s 1955 adaptation, starring James Dean, but she’s also getting a lot more time to flesh things out. Eliza Kazan’s ran just under two hours, whereas the new series will probably take a good three or four episodes before the plot kicks in.
East Of Eden debuts on Netflix on October 1.
