The film, which will supposedly teach us something we didn't already know about Scrooge, opens next month.

Full Ebenezer trailer looks a whole lot like the other Christmas Carols

With Ebenezer, the big Johnny Depp comeback vehicle, we’ve been promised a new take on the story of Ebenezer Scrooge. He’ll have some kind of gray area that was apparently missing before. Even in today’s new trailer, we’re told to “think again” if we think we know his story. But the actual footage we see in the trailer looks a whole lot like the story we’ve actually seen many times before. Sure, this is a Ti West joint so there are some extra creepy, ghoulish prosthetics, but we more or less see the entire narrative arc of the Dickens classic play out in the two or so minutes of the trailer. Maybe the story we’ve been told is actually just the story.

Of course, it’s hard not to receive a lot of this marketing cynically, given that it hinges on Depp’s return to top billing after a drawn-out legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard (during which, it bears repeating, a U.K. judge found it “substantially true” that he was a “wife beater”). That Depp is front and center of a marketing campaign based on the idea “Do you really know the truth about this guy?” is a little suspect, especially since we do actually get a pretty rounded look at Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. It’s still a bit unclear how this version of the story will be substantially different from those others, but if you’re curious, you can see it for yourself starting on November 13.
