Charli xcx is stranded in Poland in Erupcja trailer

It’s easy to confuse the order of the roughly half-dozen film projects Charli xcx has going on right now. Although many of us may have already seen The Moment or 100 Nights Of Hero, Erupcja is technically billed as Charli’s film acting debut. The film, which the brat musician wrote with director Pete Ohs and co-star Lena Góra, premiered at TIFF last year. Now, 1-2 Special has shared a trailer for the project ahead of its April release in the U.S.

Described as an “anti-romantic comedy,” Erupcja sees Bethany (Charli xcx) and her potential fiancé Rob (Will Madden) stuck in Poland after Mount Etna erupts. She seems unsure whether she actually wants to be married to him, which she discusses with her friend Nel (Góra) in Poland. Also, Jeremy O. Harris is there as Claude to remind the characters that they shouldn’t joke about a volcanic eruption because people might die.

Viewing the film at TIFF, critic Katie Rife had a positive first impression of the project. Calling it the director’s “best film yet,” Rife writes, “In some ways, it’s a movie about the things we don’t say, and the things we project onto each other. In others, it’s about finding the courage to look past your own needs and actually see the humanity in other people. Charli xcx gives a surprisingly good, grounded performance in this regard, adjusting her body language and eye contact to express the things her character can’t.” The rest of us will be able to see it for ourselves when Erupcja opens on April 17.
