This afternoon, The Playlist exclusively reported that David Fincher and Brad Pitt were working on a sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood and, we’ll admit, we all thought it was a sick April Fools’ joke. But now Deadline has confirmed the news, and it appears that the movie that probably won’t be called Twice Upon A Time…In Hollywood is officially happening.

It might, however, be called The Movie Critic. The new film is based on a screenplay from Tarantino. Last April, Tarantino reportedly shelved whatever script he was working on, deciding he didn’t actually want to make The Movie Critic for his near-mythical tenth, final movie. Deadline reports that Pitt got Tarantino’s blessing to bring the script to Fincher, which focuses on the adventures of Cliff Booth after the events of the 2019 film, and that it was “evident” that Booth would be the main character of The Movie Critic

Fincher has an exclusive deal with Netflix, so presumably, that’s where this will feature will land. It’s a bit of a bummer to think that if the film gets a theatrical release, it will likely be a very limited one; Fincher’s last film The Killer received a very limited theatrical release, bringing in under $500 thousand at the box office. Though it’s exceptionally hard to imagine Tarantino would ever direct a movie that went right to a streaming platform, Deadline‘s Justin Kroll reports that he respects Fincher enough to let him handle the film. However, Leonardo DiCaprio, who starred opposite Pitt in the first film, is unlikely to be involved, per the outlet. Hey, you can’t win ’em all.
