Fist Of Legend
Jet Li was a Hong Kong
action star for nearly a decade before Fist Of Legend, and he had two kung-fu
classics on his résumé: Once Upon A Time In China and Swordsman II. But Fist Of Legend made Li an icon,
positioning him as the true successor to Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. Fist Of
Legend—a
remake of Lee's Fist Of Fury—stars Li as a student who returns home
after his master is murdered, and launches a campaign to thwart the Japanese
occupying Shanghai. The film was made in the '90s and is set in the '30s, but
feels like the '70s, thanks to its bright look, tightly shot action sequences,
and frequent bone-crunching—not to mention the none-too-subtle plea for
cultural tolerance.
