After nearly 3 decades of Family Guy, Stewie is going solo

Fox has greenlit two seasons of a Stewie Griffin spin-off to begin in 2027.

After nearly 3 decades of Family Guy, Stewie is going solo

People still love Family Guy, we imagine some Fox exec realized recently, so why not make more of it? Deadline reports today that the network has ordered two seasons of Stewie, which will follow the youngest member of the Griffin clan “in preschool and explore time and space travel.” It sounds like the series will include nods to the original Family Guy, even if it doesn’t have the same characters. Instead of Brian, Stewie’s talking non-human companion in Stewie is poised to be a 75-year-old turtle.

Deadline describes the plot, “after getting the boot from his old preschool, Stewie is forced to enroll in a new one that’s not exactly top-of-the-line. It’s attended by a handful of kids he doesn’t know, and a 75-year-old class turtle with a half-cocked theory on just about every subject. Stewie’s miserable, the other kids are miserable, and even the turtle is miserable… until Stewie begins rolling out his trusty array of devices to take them anywhere in space and time, turning every boring day at school into an insane and surreal adventure.”

“I’d like to thank Fox for this incredible opportunity, and I’m excited to start pretending I’m collaborating closely with them on the show,” says MacFarlane. The news also comes a few days after MacFarlane said he was done with Ted on Peacock after two seasons because the show was too expensive to keep making.

Stewie is set to premiere for the 2027-28 TV season as part of Fox’s existing adult animation slate, which includes Family Guy, The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, and American Dad. All four of those shows have also all been renewed for the 2028-29 season, so Fox’s animated slate sounds pretty set for the immediate future. Fox also renewed Dan Harmon’s Krapopolis last May up through its fifth season, which would likely premiere in fall 2027, and has ordered more of Grimsburg and Universal Bad Guys as well.
