“I am thrilled to accept the Razzie award in so many important categories for @megalopolisfilm , and for the distinctive honor of being nominated as the worst director, worst screenplay, and worst picture at a time when so few have the courage to go against the prevailing trends of contemporary moviemaking!” the acclaimed director shared in an Instagram post this morning. “In this wreck of a world today, where ART is given scores as if it were professional wrestling, I chose to NOT follow the gutless rules laid down by an industry so terrified of risk that despite the enormous pool of young talent at its disposal, may not create pictures that will be relevant and alive 50 years from now.”
Though Megalopolis has faced plenty of criticism for its sometimes incoherent plot and imagery, the film also has plenty of defenders who admire the big swings Coppola takes, whether or not they all land. While critics for this site have compared the film to works from both Ari Aster and Neil Breen, Coppola has a different comparison in mind. “What an honor to stand alongside a great and courageous filmmaker like Jacques Tati who impoverished himself completely to make one of cinema’s most beloved failures, PLAYTIME!” the director continues before apparently suggesting that the concept of politics could cease to exist. “My sincere thanks to all my brilliant colleagues who joined me to make our work of art, MEGALOPOLIS, and let us remind ourselves us [sic] that box-office is only about money, and like war, stupidity and politics has no true place in our future.”
Elsewhere at the ceremony, Megalopolis star Jon Voight won the award for Worst Supporting Actor, which also included his performances in Reagan, Shadowland, and Strangers, per The Hollywood Reporter. The entire cast of Megalopolis lost the award for Worst Screen Combo to Jaoquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in Joker: Folie Á Deux, while Madame Web won the awards for Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Leading Actress for Dakota Johnson.
