“There’s six people on a shortlist,” backtracked Oldman via Deadline, quickly adding, “I heard a rumor that they’ve picked James Bond, but they haven’t announced it yet, which is their prerogative.”
Oldman, who earlier this week seemingly spilled the tea that he was on the inside of the highly anticipated casting process for Amazon’s continuation of the Bond franchise, sought to set the record straight once and for all, saying that while he does not know the actor stepping into Daniel Craig’s designer spy shoes, he’s still rooting for his Slow Horses co-star Jack Lowden. Lowden’s wife Saoirse Ronan is also on board with Lowden getting the part, at least partly so she can fulfill her lifelong dream of Blofeld-style villainy.
Oldman’s gotten some studio heat in the past for his loose lips, with the Commissioner Gordon actor once accidentally revealing that Christopher Nolan would return for The Dark Knight Rises before the deal was signed. He also once left his top secret script for that movie in a hotel room, so his secret agent cred appears to be more the stuff of fiction.
Concluding the whole 007 matter, Oldman also denied that he’d ever want to take on a big screen Bond baddie, sharing with his Toronto audience the sage advice, “Don’t do drugs and Bond villains.”
