As elitist cultural gatekeepers, we here at The A.V. Club have traditionally bestowed our “best of” honors from on high in our wood-paneled parlor, luxuriating in supple leather wingback chairs as we sip fine brandy, smoke Cuban cigars, and use galley copies of unremarkable books as kindling for our roaring fire.
While we hold fast to that hallowed tradition—this year we dined on duck l’orange with a few bottles of an extremely rare post-war Domaine De La Romanée-Conti pinot noir—we have decided to give you, the reader, the tiniest taste of our cloistered illuminati scheming via our first-ever readers’ poll.
Beginning today, you can vote in a variety of polls for books, TV, music, games, film, comedy, and podcasts. Each A.V. Club vertical gets its own short poll, asking for your favorite of the year, along with other questions like most anticipated releases of 2014, most overrated, reviews we got wrong, and others. Each poll will only take a couple of minutes to complete.
Voting opens today, and polls close Wednesday, December 18. When all votes have been tabulated, a plume of white smoke will emanate from the roof of our building in the River North area of Chicago, and an announcement of the results will follow on Monday, December 23. We will otherwise disappear for those final two weeks of the year, commiserating with our puppet-master peers at an undisclosed location. What happens there, we can’t say—your window into the pentaverate will have closed by then.
