Finally: A chance to hear what the world's greatest film reporter (and her mate Paul) think about the state of modern movies.

Great Job, Internet: Philomena Cunk has a Letterboxd and it's wonderfully deranged

We’re about a week out at this point from the release of Cunk On Cinema, the latest installment in comedian Diane Morgan and Black Mirror creator Charlier Brooker’s ongoing exploration of the various facets of our world, as seen by the world’s dimmest reporter who won’t stop bringing up the antics of her mate Paul. As an exploration of the world of cinema, specifically, the series is leaning hard into modern film discourse for its promotion—including the reveal that Philomena Cunk now has her own Letterboxd and it is, not surprisingly, a pretty great read.

This is, of course, mere marketing—something Cunk “herself” notes in the bio, where she writes “Done a show about cinema so the producers made me set this up for PR reasons. They’re literally watching me type this now.” But it’s also a reminder that, beyond Morgan’s skill at dead-panning interviews with various people forced to humor Philomena Cunk simply because she happens to have a camera pointed at them, a core of the Cunk series’ appeal is the level of misdirection and skill that goes into its joke writing. Sometimes that relies on simplicity, as with her Rain Man review (“Disappointing superhero film. Tom Cruise stars as Rain-Man”), or her The Wicker Man review (“Disappointing superhero film. Edward Woodward stars as Wicker-Man.”) And sometimes it gets far more elaborate, as when she notes, in a classic Cunk-ism, that Grease stars “Olivia Newt and John,” or her beautifully deranged plot synopsis of E.T.

The account appears to be posting a new review per day, leading up the series’ November 15 release. And while we don’t know if any of them will be as spoiler-filled or hard-hitting as Philomena’s one-star take on The Martian—the pithy and practical “Matt Damon eats his own shit”—we do know that we’ll take extra Cunk jokes when and where we can get them.
