Philomena Cunk careens into the arena of film in new Cunk On Cinema trailer

That feeling of relief we’re all feeling right now is the collective unclenching over the state of the planet for one blessed minute, because Netflix has released a new trailer for the next round of Diane Morgan/Charlie Brooker inanity: Cunk On Cinema. The new six-episode series sends inquisitive documentarian Philomena Cunk careening into cinephilia, with Cunk trying to grasp over a century of filmmaking by asking the age-old question, “Why movies?” We wish her the best, though it’s quite understood that filmmaking can be quite slippery. The longline for the series reads like so:

Diane Morgan returns as Philomena Cunk in a new series from Charlie Brooker. Billed as Cunk’s most glamorous outing yet, she charts the history of cinema, from the invention of the camera and the New Wave filmmakers of the 1960s right up to the entrance of CGI and what the future of AI holds. Cunk will attempt to demystify it all while sitting in lumpy seats with stale popcorn, asking herself where did cinema come from? And why? What does it want? And why can’t it tell us?

Featuring conversations with filmmaking muckety-mucks such as Oscar-nominated composer Daniel Pemberton (Project Hail Mary), film critics Mark Kermode, Catherine Bray, Geoff Andrew, and Kaleem Aftab, Transformers director Michael Bay, and Morgan’s fellow Marvel colleague Benedict Cumberbatch, some of whom seem positively baffled by Cunk’s guileless pursuit of knowledge, despite Philomena asking very reasonable questions while seated in a chair. Cunk On Cinema seems like another finely produced piss-take bordering on performance art, though Morgan and Brooker are no doubt playing a dangerous game by entering the “On Cinema” arena—perhaps a reckoning with the world-famous Heidecker/Turkington team is imminent, though such a collision could very possibly rip a new one in the deadpan comedy continuum.

Cunk On Cinema hits Netflix like a squeaky train on November 15. You can watch the new trailer below.
