Another month, another sports comedy on TV. This time around, it’s Hulu’s zany Chad Powers, which returns for its sophomore run in September. The streamer released the first trailer for season two today, and it confirms that Glen Powell’s eponymous character is doubling down on his mustachioed fake identity.
Co-created by Powell and Loki‘s Michael Waldron (and inspired by an Eli Manning skit), Chad Powers has a lot of tricks up its sleeve. The enjoyability factor of those tricks, however, depends on your threshold for cringe. The show centers on an arrogant former quarterback, Russ Holliday (Powell), who wants to reclaim his lost glory. So, with the help of heavy makeup, fake teeth, prosthetics, and a Southern twang, he transforms into Chad Powers and joins the football team of a small college in Georgia, hoping to prove he’s still got it.
He gets close to the fellow players and the coach, but his lies catch up to him by the end of season one, when the assistant coach/his love interest, Ricky (Perry Mattfeld) learns who he really is, leading both of them to blackmail each other. Season two’s trailer does offer up a plot twist: Ricky and Chad are actually working together now, mostly so that the Coach Hudson (Steve Zahn)—who happens to be Ricky’s dad—doesn’t find out the truth. The six new episodes will reveal if the two of them manage to pull it off and possibly become a couple.
The ensemble includes Frankie Rodriguez, Quentin Plair, Wynn Everett, Toby Huss, and Colton Ryan. Gillian Jacobs and Colin Woodell are set to appear as well. Season two premieres on September 3.
