It’s the Green Day story… sort of. The early days of the legendary punk rock band serve as the inspiration for New Years Rev, an upcoming feature from writer-director Lee Kirk. The film follows three friends (played by Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust) who travel to Los Angeles under the mistaken impression that their band is opening for Green Day on New Years Eve. Per the logline (via Variety), “Their roadtrip is a rowdy and mischievous jaunt across the country filled with adventures, based on the exploits of Green Day and their years of living in a tour van.”

The fictional band is meant to resemble Green Day’s own youthful exploits before the breakout success of Dookie. “Van days rule,” Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said in a statement (via Variety). “You will drive all night on no sleep then play a show for 10 kids in a basement of a friend of a friend’s house 50 miles east of anywhere you’ve ever heard of. But you’ll do it again the next day, and the one after that. Because you’re doing it with your bandmates who become your family and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever known. It’s electric. Let the music and mischief ensue.”

Not doing a very good job of convincing the rest of us it’s not a monopoly, Live Nation Productions is behind New Years Rev. (The ticketing giant’s film and TV arm has produced a bunch of musician documentaries and also the 2018 A Star Is Born.) Kirk, meanwhile, previously teamed up with Armstrong on the 2016 feature Ordinary World, which starred Armstrong as a down-on-his-luck aging punk. Kirk’s wife Jenna Fischer will also star in New Years Rev with her Office Ladies bestie Angela Kinsey as well as Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Keen Ruffalo. Armstrong and his Green Day bandmates Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool will serve as producers.
