Gwyneth Paltrow will lead her first TV show in The Apology

Gwyneth Paltrow has landed her first leading TV role ever. Paltrow will star in an upcoming thriller drama called The Apology, from A24 and Cut To, Deadline reported on Monday. The Apology scored a two-season straight-to-series order at Netflix, a move that may seem jarring amid the company’s massive layoffs and its ongoing struggle to retain viewership after the first season of a show. The series follows Evelyn (Paltrow) and Caleb Amspoker, a couple whose son was killed 18 years prior in an intriguing cold case. According to Deadline, Netflix was eager to snatch up The Apology and “bought the competitive project preemptively,” and Peter Rice, the newly appointed chief content officer following Bela Bajaria’s layoff, wasn’t involved in the deal.

The logline reads: “When a stranger suddenly appears and confesses, justice finally seems possible—until they learn the killer may get off with a reduced sentence. Faced with that unbearable truth, Evelyn and Caleb decide to take matters into their own hands.” Joe Murtagh (The Woman In The Wall) wrote the series and will serve as the showrunner, and Thomas Vinterberg, the filmmaker behind Another Round, will direct it. Paltrow, Murtagh, and Joe Hipps of Cut To will serve as executive producers. The Apology is a big deal for Paltrow, who’s best known for her big-screen roles and her involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (even though she often forgets about that). Gleeks will also likely remember Paltrow for her Emmy-winning guest role as Holly Holliday on Glee (she later appeared on Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series The Politician, too).
