Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Sunday, August 2nd. All times are Eastern.
Halt and Catch Fire (AMC, 10 p.m.): A second and more impressive season comes to an end with possible upheaval at the startup. Dennis Perkins is concerned for the show after it failed to bring in significant ratings, so do him a solid and check out his coverage or else we’ll assume you don’t give a damn about women in STEM (/Lee Pace).
Wet Hot American Summer: First Day at Camp (Netflix, 1 p.m.): The prequel series dives into the origin story for Elizabeth Bank’s bellbottomed popular girl, Lindsey. Joshua Alston, reporting for every other day coverage duty, is starting to come around to tube socks.
Poldark (PBS, 9 p.m): “In the Season 1 finale, Poldark is blamed when Verity follows her heart; and Warleggan seeks to stamp out Poldark’s smelting operation. In other events, an epidemic leads to tragedy; and a shipwreck proves to be both a blessing and a curse.” We here at What’s On Tonight: Sunday Edition once called Grantchester the most British “option on television this night or maybe any night, ever.” We were not aware of Poldark’s existence at the time. We regret the error.
True Detective (HBO, 9 p.m.)
HUMANS (AMC, 9 p.m.)
Masters of Sex (Showtime, 10 p.m.)
Ballers (HBO, 10 p.m.)
The Brink (HBO, 10:30 p.m.)
Rick and Morty (Adult Swim, 11:30 p.m.)
The Simpsons (3 p.m.): Homer Simpson isn’t a great football coach, and Bart isn’t a great quarterback, but at least Joe Namath is there to help as Vikram Murthi takes on “Bart Star.“
What else is on?
Bachelor in Paradise (ABC, 8 p.m.): Just when you thought you were safe for a week, we are here to tell you that you are not! Keep this in mind if you’re idly channel flipping and think you’ve stumbled upon the season finale of unREAL, which would be startling and deeply disappointing no matter what a certain salty reality show host says.
I Am Cait (E!, 8 p.m.): Meanwhile, Caitlyn and her new transgender community goes on a road trip. We hope and pray it will be a Thelma and Louise homage, but we’re prepared to get burned on this one.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (FX, 7 p.m.): Refresh your memory on who the hell Jeremy Renner plays in this franchise before you go to Rogue Nation, which A.A. Dowd gave a B+ for “it’s super fun” reasons.
MLB Baseball: Nationals at Mets (ESPN, 8 p.m.)
In case you missed it
We Bare Bears: Kevin Johnson checked in on an endearingly silly new cartoon which, fair warning, has a very catchy theme song by Estelle herself.
