HBO might be spending Game Of Thrones finale money on Harry Potter

HBO, or “Home Box Office,” has always leaned into its show-offy name by pulling in eye-watering budgets for its original series, though recent reporting suggests its latest franchise series, Harry Potter, could be among its biggest. This is per Deadline, which reports that the network is spending big on its ambitious TV rehash of J.K. Rowling’s novels—as in, “The Last Of Us” big. “Final season Game Of Thrones” big. According to “a source familiar with the adaptation,” recent filings with the U.K.’s Companies House (the corporate registry for the United Kingdom) for Potter U.K. producer Plum Jam Productions are painting a picture of just how much HBO is shelling out for TV Hogwarts.

Those filings reportedly show that Plum Jam’s revenue spiked to £130.6 million ($175 million) in 2025, up from the company’s 2024 filing, which reported £18.4 million ($24.6 million). Those who like to subtract enormous numbers just for funsies will tell you that this is a difference of £112 million. Now, *puts pencil behind ear* when one compares these numbers with those of, say, the final season of HBO’s Game Of Thrones, one will find that they exceed the cost to produce the George R.R. Martin adaptation, which had a flying dragon, a Cleganebowl, and all sorts of epic-pants things going on in it. Factoring in inflation (which Deadline does not do), GOT season 8 came to roughly $19 million per episode—and at six episodes, that would put the cost of the season at a budget of $114 million.

Deadline reports that such sums put the cost of Harry Potter season one—which adapts Rowling’s Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone—at “as much as £150M ($201M),” which would certainly set a bar for the series as it embarks on plans to adapt each of the seven Potter books across as many seasons. “Taking Plum Jam Productions’ earnings as a rough guide, Harry Potter‘s first season could average out at around £18.8M ($25.2M) per episode,” the outlet wrote. While all these millions flying around can get the ol’ nose to bleeding (just us?), it’s worth noting that much of the cost for Harry Potter But On TV This Time has reportedly gone into sets built at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, which are meant to be used across all the seasons yet to come. If sanity prevails, HBO could be casting a slight Reducio spell on Potter‘s future swish-and-flick adventures.
