HBO picks up Bill Hader’s lonely hit man comedy

It probably doesn’t mean anything, but Saturday Night Live alums sure do seem interested in assassins lately. Taran Killam is making a movie about eccentric killers teaming up to take on one of their own, and now HBO has picked up a comedy starring Bill Hader as a lonely hit man who moves to Los Angeles. The show is called Barry, and Hader directed and co-wrote the pilot with Silicon Valley’s Alec Berg. Obviously, this doesn’t mean that SNL is secretly training its cast members to be assassins, but it also doesn’t necessarily not mean that.

This news comes from Deadline, which says Hader’s character in Barry is a former Marine who has a job as “a low-rent hit man in the Midwest” but is unsatisfied with the direction his life has taken. After getting hired to kill somebody in Los Angeles, he “ends up finding an accepting community in a group of eager hopefuls within the LA theater scene.” Barry will also star Henry Winkler as an “inspiring acting teacher,” Stephen Root as the guy who tells Hader who to kill, and Sarah Goldberg as an aspiring actress. The show will start filming at some point next year.
