Hear Future Islands play “Balance” live at Death By Audio
In November of 2014, Williamsburg, Brooklyn’s long-standing show space Death By Audio—which was also a recording studio and effects pedal workshop—closed its doors after Vice bought the building. Since then, Death By Audio has been immortalized in a number of ways, including the documentary Goodnight Brooklyn and the forthcoming compilation of songs recorded live at DBA, Start Your Own Fucking Show Space. The three-LP set features tracks from artists such as Ted Leo, Screaming Females, Nots, Protomartyr and many more, but today The A.V. Club is premiering Future Islands’ performance of “Balance.” Originally released on Future Island’s third album On The Water, this version of “Balance” inserts the swagger the band has become known for. It shows Future Islands completely in its element, with the crowd hooting and hollering as the band tears its way through the track. This version of “Balance” captures the sweaty, communal nature of Death By Audio and other spaces like it, and Future Islands’ performance shows just how much love was put into that room.
