Himesh Patel also wants to believe in Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot

Ryan Coogler has found his Mulder type. Himesh Patel is joining Danielle Deadwyler in Coogler’s upcoming X-Files reboot as the second half of the show’s pair of FBI special agents searching for whatever truth might be out there. However, simply because they’re enlisting in the bureau’s alien-hunting task force doesn’t mean they’re playing Mulder and Scully, beloved parts played for decades by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, respectively. Per Deadline’s sources, both Patel and Deadwyler will be playing new characters, which should ease the concerns of whatever sky-is-falling X-Files fans bemoan the casting of two very good and interesting actors for the roles. If they need more of an endorsement, Anderson recently said that the reboot is going to be “fucking cool.”

As if to put a fine point on how much Coogler wants to make this show for his mom, a huge X-Files fan, the Oscar-winning screenwriter is writing and directing the pilot. The synopsis from Deadline certainly sounds familiar, stating that the show will follow two “vastly different FBI agents,” who bond once assigned to the FBI’s paranormal investigations division. We still don’t know who the skeptic and believer are, nor do we know when the show will premiere. Perhaps we shouldn’t get too excited too fast. Being an Oscar winner doesn’t guarantee that your reboot of a ’90s-favorite supernatural TV show is going to move forward at Hulu. Just ask Buffy.
