In a gut-wrenching new update, trans actress Hunter Schafer shared that the gender marker on her passport had been changed from female to male. “I had a bit of a harsh reality check today,” the Cuckoo said in an eight-minute TikTok story, before showing the camera that her new passport had an “M” (for male) listed under “Sex.” On the first day of his second term, Donald Trump signed an executive order stating that the U.S. recognizes only “two sexes, male and female” and that those sexes are “not changeable.” Schafer’s initial reaction to this was “I’ll believe it when I see it,” she said. “And today I saw it on my new passport.”

Schafer, who first updated her gender markers in her teens, needed to apply for the new passport after her last one was stolen while filming in Barcelona. She filled everything out like she normally would and listed her gender as female, but when she “opened it up, they had changed the marker to male.” Since she never updated her birth certificate, she theorized that the agency cross-referenced the document and defaulted to the gender she was assigned at birth. “This is the first time this has happened to me… and I do believe it is a direct result of the administration our country is currently operating under,” she said.

Schafer didn’t share her video to “fearmonger, or to create drama, or to receive consolation. I don’t need it.” But she did want to post to “note the reality of the situation and that it’s happening. I was shocked. I just didn’t think it was actually going to happen,” she said, noting that “no one, no matter their circumstance… is excluded.”

“I also want to say, I don’t give a fuck that they put an ‘M’ on my passport. It doesn’t change really anything about me or my transness; however, it does make life a little harder,” Schafer concluded. “Trans people are beautiful. We are never going to stop existing. I’m never going to stop being trans. A letter on a passport can’t change that, and fuck this administration.”
