Complaints surrounding Insomniac’s Wolverine were persistent and noisy even before its September 15 launch. However, the developer is trying its damnedest to soothe players’ berserker rage by mending the fixable aspects of the game players don’t like. Per IGN, the latest update for Wolverine features three new toggle-off settings for fans who aggressively dislike the game’s “hand-holdy” tracking mechanics, as though Logan’s fuzzy mitts gripping our own as we ferociously stab through wave after wave of robots and soldiers and robot soldiers was some kind of bad thing. Now, players can switch off the Whiskey Bottle scent trails, Material Crate Audio Clues, and Nightmare Door Roots, which previously were things that directed you to the next interactive element by way of a visual representation of the mutant’s enhanced senses.
Stashed in the patch notes is another fix involving the game’s bizarre (“uncanny”?) bathroom signs, which some players claimed was evidence that Insomniac had used generative AI during the game’s development. (Insomniac says, “No way, bub.”) With this latest update, players can now enjoy Wolverine without having to look at the game’s bewildering bathroom signs and its coddling tracking lines (famously dubbed “fart gas” by Washington Post journalist Gene Park), which will surely temper players’ feelings about the game’s other perceived shortcomings. Oops, we spoke too soon: Some of the game’s farty “scent trails” remain regardless of toggling, like in story missions such as “The One That Got Away” that requires Wolverine to track down mutant telepath/love interest Jean Grey, though IGN reports that Insomniac’s prior update “reduced trail opacity” so as to not further provoke its ferocious player base.
