Who he is: Ivan Vanko, a.k.a. Whiplash
His power: Vanko possesses an exoskeletal suit, powered by a modified arc reactor, that controls two long, electrified whips that emit massive amounts of energy, rendering them able to slice through almost any material.
His story: When we first meet him in Iron Man 2, Vanko is caring for his ailing father, a scientist who we subsequently learn was partners with Howard Stark in the U.S. before betraying him and thus being deported. Ivan is a brilliant scientist and engineer, almost on par with Tony Stark, and blames the Starks for his family’s ill fortune. He designs the Whiplash suit and attacks Tony during a Grand Prix race in Monaco. After being captured, he is broken out of jail by Justin Hammer, who sets him up with a lab and instructions to develop an army of robot suits to rival Tony Stark. Instead, Vanko designs a series of weaponized robots—along with an Iron Man-esque Whiplash suit for himself—which he unleashes upon the public at the Stark Expo. After Iron Man and War Machine destroy all the robots, Vanko arrives in his new suit, and is killed by the two heroes after a brief struggle.
