James Bond screen tests are imminent

Amazon MGM Studios may soon have its James Bond in its sights, according to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter. This latest morsel of Bond news has THR‘s Borys Kit feeling particularly ecstatic—Kit’s original headline contained an exclamation point, which we wish we’d screengrabbed—which is easy enough to appreciate. After months of casting rumors and sweetly supportive signal-boosts for Bond-aspirant Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) from actors like Gary Oldman and Saoirse Ronan, any movement by Amazon to lock down the Bond role at last can feel like, we dunno, the horsepower of a silver Aston Martin. Yet don’t get your martinis too shaken up—THR‘s sources say screen tests are set to begin in London this weekend, as early as Friday, and the competition has apparently thinned out of late.

Actors rumored for the role have been pinging around like bullets from a Walther PPK for months now, with the list including Jacob Elordi (The Dog Stars), Jack O’Connell (Sinners), fellow Beatles Paul Mescal and Harris Dickinson, and Jack Barton (Heartstopper). THR notes that while it remains “unclear” who is testing this weekend, with anywhere between three and five actors being tested for “stunts, camera presence, and dialogue” during the “comprehensive” tests, Lowden and Callum Turner (One Night Only) are said to be “in the mix.” Kit also reports that it isn’t likely Elordi and O’Connell will be fitting for tuxes over the weekend. As to the veracity of these sources, a presumably very busy Amazon rep referred THR to a statement the company made in May, which said “The search for the next James Bond is underway. While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.”
