Baby Reindeer's Jessica Gunning to make her own kind of music in Cass Elliot biopic

All the leaves are brown, and the sky has a new star for the upcoming Mama Cass biopic. Per Deadline, Baby Reindeer‘s resident stalker will play Cass Elliot, the late Mama of The Mamas & The Papas, in a new biopic about the singer. Based on the memoir written by Elliot’s daughter, Owen Elliot-Kugell, My Mama Cass will focus on Elliot’s career as a trailblazing singer. But Deadline notes that this won’t a “traditional biopic” but rather one that explores how “her true power was that she took things the world didn’t want to give her…a gifted, outspoken singer who refused to be defined by her weight or the men around her, forging a singular career and choosing motherhood on her own terms at a time when the culture wasn’t ready for any of it.” We’re not sure what makes that untraditional, but the film is being written by Emma Forrest and produced by Veritas Entertainment, who found its rock biopic avenue with A Complete Unknown and is staying in that lane.

After recording several albums and performing in a touring production of The Music Man, Elliot joined the New Journeyman, which would be renamed the Mamas & the Papas. The Mamas & The Papas were a whirlwind success for approximately three years, but recorded a number of hits in that time, including “California Dreamin ‘” and “Monday, Monday” before breaking up. Afterwards, Elliot ran a successful Las Vegas show and released several albums as a solo artist before her death in 1971 at age 32. Though many have repeated the ancient rock ‘n’ roll legend that Elliot died from choking on a ham sandwich, the truth is she died of a heart attack.
