Only five Jessica Langes could lure Jessica Lange back to American Horror Story

Murphy claimed in a recent Vogue interview that he had to guarantee a musical number for the now 77-year-old Feud star, but according to Lange, that wasn’t what sealed the deal for her to reprise her role. Or roles, as Lange revealed during an appearance on Live With Kelly And Mark this week that her main condition was that she’d be able to bring back all four of the memorably terrifying characters she’s played on AHS over the years.

“Ryan Murphy talked me into coming back,” Lange told Kelly Ripa and her onetime AHS: Asylum costar Mark Consuelos. “First, he talked to me about playing [Murder House‘s] Constance, which I think was his favorite character that I did. But I said I’ll come back if I can do all four characters.” And when a screen icon tells you she wants to play multiple roles, you say yes, as Lange confirmed that she’ll be channeling not only Season 1’s Constance Langdon, but Asylum‘s Sister Jude, Coven‘s witchy Fiona Goode, and Freak Show‘s Elsa Mars. Plus, the actor hinted, an unnamed fifth character.

“I threw in an extra, that’s kind of a mystery character,” revealed Lange, who won Emmy’s for playing both Langdon and Goode, thus signaling her understanding that fans of the series can never get enough Jessica Lange. Or perhaps five Jessica Langes in the same musical number. 

American Horror Story: 13 premieres on Thursday, September 24 on FX.
