LAPD releases video of Jillian Lauren, wife of Weezer bassist, in police confrontation

Earlier this month, we reported on a strange story adjacent to the world of music: News that Jillian Lauren Shriner, an author who’s also married to Scott Shriner, bassist for Weezer, had been (non-fatally) shot and then arrested by the LAPD, on suspicion of attempted murder. (The cops, per their reports, had been pursuing a suspect in an unrelated hit-and-run case when they encountered Lauren, who was allegedly standing outside her home with a firearm.)

Now, the LAPD has shed some further light on the incident, releasing body cam footage and security camera video that both shows police officers converging on what became a small stand-off, as well as Lauren holding a gun while walking around her backyard, and then apparently raising the firearm. (She is also, we feel moved to note, shown to be wearing a shirt emblazoned with Weezer’s logo, which we’re sure gave some poor PR person a minor aneurysm when they saw it.) In the video, you can hear cops repeatedly yell at Lauren to drop the gun, and a slow-motion section purports to show her firing it, although that’s difficult to discern from the footage—especially because it’s immediately answered by a large number of gunshots from the police. (Warning for people uncomfortable with blood: The video contains a close-up photo of Lauren’s gunshot wound, to her arm, at around the 20-minute mark.)

The incident occurred on April 8, and ended with Lauren being handcuffed, taken to the hospital, and then absentee booked on a charge of attempted murder. She’s since posted bail, with a court date set for April 30. Although Scott Shriner very briefly addressed a question about the incident back on April 10—confirming to a New York Post reporter that “She’s alright, thank you for asking,” before dropping a reference to the band’s then-upcoming Coachella shows—the Weezer PR machine is pretty clearly keeping its distance from the story so far.
