Relegating her in death to the same position she held in life—just outside the theater doors—the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says that it didn’t snub Joan Rivers by leaving her out of the watercolor death montage at last night’s Oscars ceremony. In response to fans upset that Rivers, a fixture on the Oscars red carpet and originator of the now-controversial phrase “who are you wearing?,” was not included in the televised “In Memoriam” segment, an AMPAS rep tells Buzzfeed,
“Joan Rivers is among the many worthy artists and filmmakers we were unfortunately unable to feature in the ‘In Memoriam’ segment of this year’s Oscar show. She is, however, included in our ‘In Memoriam’ gallery on Oscar.com.”
The “In Memoriam” gallery, if you can find it, is located on the second page of the “Photos” section on the Oscars website. The gallery also contains pictures of notable omissions Jan Hooks, Taylor Negron, and Elaine Stritch, as well as a bunch of other people whose lives and deaths were deemed not quite ready for primetime. A more extensive tribute to Rivers at this year’s Emmys is probable.
