John Travolta's directorial debut lands Cannes premiere

A decade removed from his last great performance, playing Robert Shapiro in The People V. O.J. Simpson, John Travolta is taking flight with a new film and a new job. For his directorial debut, Travolta is fueling up the jet for Propeller One-Way Coach, an Apple Original, based on Travolta’s 1997 42-page children’s book of the same name. One-Way Coach will come in for a landing at the 79th Cannes Film Festival before making its way to Apple TV on May 29.

Here’s the synopsis:

“Set in the golden age of aviation, a young airplane enthusiast Jeff (played by newcomer Clark Shotwell) and his mother (Kelly Eviston-Quinnett) set off on a one-way cross-country odyssey to Hollywood, which transforms a simple flight into the trip of a lifetime. Between airline meals, charming flight attendants (played by Ella Bleu Travolta and Olga Hoffman), unexpected stopovers, larger-than-life passengers, and a thrilling glimpse at first class, the journey unfolds in moments both magical and unexpected, charting the course for the boy’s future.”

Stuck in one of the deepest valleys of his career, Travolta is turning to his lifelong love of aviation for escape. Having spent the last decade top-lining cheapie action thrillers such as Cash Out and High Rollers, while also starring as a T-Bird Santa Claus in a Capital One ad, One-Way Coach positions Travolta for another comeback in a career filled with them. However, in recent years, the only projects that pushed him back into the spotlight were for negative press, such as Gotti and Fred Durst’s The Fanatic. One-Way Coach marks his first flight-based movie since 1996’s smoking-angel classic Michael.
