Journey to an edgy sci-fi dystopia in this Tomorrow’s Ashes exclusive
Black Mask Studios has been having a remarkable year, significantly expanding its roster of creators and range of titles to establish itself as a rising publisher in the creator-owned comics world. Black Mask is closing out a fruitful 2016 with a continuation of one of its most popular books, Godkiller, reuniting the original creative team for a new sequel to their dystopian sci-fi story.
Godkiller: Tomorrow’s Ashes #1 debuts next month, beginning the next leg of Halfpipe and Soledad’s journey to save their friend Tommy, whose body has been infected with spider eggs that are about to hatch. Written by Black Mask co-founder Matt Pizzolo with art by Anna Wieszczyk, the Godkiller project is the most ambitious endeavor undertaken by the studio, with an “illustrated film” accompanying the comic. A Blu-ray of that film is included with the oversized first issue of Tomorrow’s Ashes, catching new readers up on the story thus far to make it easier to jump into this next chapter of an ongoing narrative.
These preview pages of Tomorrow’s Ashes #1 highlight the murky, unsettling atmosphere cultivated by the creative team, and Wieszczyk’s artwork has undergone a significant upgrade in the time between the two series. The incorporation of photographic backgrounds is smoother, and she’s starting to put as much thought in the environments as she does in her bold characterizations. The first issue of Tomorrow’s Ashes is a fantastic value at 100 pages and a Blu-ray for $7.99, and readers can check it out when it hits stands on December 14.
