Kathleen Kennedy now running 2028 Olympic ceremonies

Former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has landed a new job: Running point on ceremonies and content for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles (LA28), according to The Hollywood Reporter. Kennedy will replace Peter Rice, who’s got his hands full after recently joining Netflix as the chief content officer following Bela Bajaria’s exit. She’ll lead the development and execution of the opening and closing ceremonies. Rice won’t be entirely removed from the festivities, though. LA28 confirmed to THR that the former Disney TV exec and Fox Searchlight head will still be involved as an executive producer. Kennedy joins already-announced executive producer and creative director Ben Winston, who’s executive produced everything from The Late Show With James Corden to the Grammys and the Friends reunion special, and executive producer of production Scott Givens, who’s familiar with the Olympics, having worked on 15 previous games.

Kennedy knows her way around large-scale productions and spectacles. She co-founded the production company Amblin Entertainment with Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall, and during her 14 years at Lucasfilm, she was heavily involved in the Star Wars franchise. Her long list of producer credits also includes E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, the Jurassic Park franchise, the Back To The Future films, and the Indiana Jones movies. In a statement to THR, Kennedy said that the Olympics have been a “touchstone” in her life. “My husband, Frank Marshall, and I have attended virtually every games since Los Angeles in 1984, and sport remains one of the great unifying experiences we share,” she said. “Peter Rice has laid a terrific foundation, and I can’t wait to get to work with Ben Winston, our creative director, and the whole LA28 team. These games are rooted in Los Angeles, but with events from Oklahoma City to LA28’s six incredible soccer/football cities, all of America gets to host the world’s finest athletes, and I’m honored to help celebrate every Olympian and Paralympian who come to compete.”
