Katy Goodman of La Sera and Greta Morgan of Springtime Carnivore have proven themselves adept at crafting pop songs of their own. But for their upcoming collaboration album, Take It, It’s Yours, the pair chose to reinterpret classic punk and hardcore songs, pulling out the hooks hidden behind the anger. The A.V. Club is premiering the video for “Ever Fall In Love,” which sees Goodman and Morgan take the Buzzcocks’ archetypal pop-punk song and turn it into a downtrodden ballad, below. Where the Buzzcocks made a bad romantic pairing a cause worth shouting about, Goodman and Morgan emphasize the song’s heartbreak, bringing it to the forefront with a gently plucked guitar and some shimmering vocal harmonies. Morgan says of the cover:

The sonic landscape of this cover feels to me like a moonlit haunted garden, so we filmed the video in my backyard in pitch black night. The flowers are a metaphor for the subject of the song: they are all night blooms which open in the beginning of the video and then close toward the end to symbolize the opening and closing of a person’s heart in a relationship that’s ended.

As for the recording, I recorded vocals and guitar in one take, then Katy overdubbed her chorus harmonies, bringing the song to life in a magical way. We added some vibraphone and guitar through the echoplex and then it was finished. This is my favorite track on the covers record.

Take It, It’s Yours is out August 26 on Polyvinyl Records and pre-orders are available now.
