For the last two years, Reeves has been talking with the DC Studios’ brain trust about getting into this new cinematic universe by adding another confusing element from a dead series. During a Reddit AMA a few years ago, he mentioned speaking to James Gunn about resurrecting Constantine. More recently, celebrating the release of Constantine‘s 20th anniversary 4K UHD Blu-ray, he told Inverse on Friday that DC has given him and director Francis Lawrence the okay to “try and write a script.”
“We’ve been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios, and they said, ‘Okay,'” Reeves said. “So, we’re going to try and write a script.”
Reeves’ John Constantine has been out of circulation for 20 years, sidestepping the entirety of the Dark Knight trilogy, the MCU, the Snyderverse, but returning to the W.B. water tower to play Batman in DC League Of Super-Pets. However, Reeves’ proposed sequel will keep him out of the larger DC mythos. The actor confirms his character will be a part of “the same world” as the first movie, promising “John Constantine’s going to be tortured even more,” and, presumably, won’t disrupt the delicate sensibilities of Gunn’s more hopeful DCU.
The Keanussance has reached a fevered pitch in recent years as the actor returns for decades-late sequels to movies that didn’t get enough love upon release. Between his John Wick schedule, Reeves popped in The Matrix Resurrections and Bill And Ted: Face The Music. Constantine marks his third reclamation project until the inevitable Lake House legacy sequel gets the green light.
