How is Keegan-Michael Key only now guest-starring on Only Murders In The Building?

[This article contains spoilers for the season four finale of Only Murders In The Building.]

In news that forced us to genuinely sit here for a minute and ask ourselves, “Wait, has Keegan-Michael Key really not been on Only Murders In The Building yet?”: Keegan-Michael Key is about to be on Only Murders In The Building.

(We’re not crazy, right? If you think of people who should have already guest-starred on OMITB, Key’s nigh-ubiquitous comedy chops leap pretty quickly to top-of-mind.)

Key’s announcement, for the Hulu show’s upcoming fifth season, presumably represents the dam breaking ahead of the annual deluge of Only Murders guest stars that sweeps across Hollywood every season, dragging various comedy mainstays and game celebrities into the show’s “people get killed but it’s usually pretty chill” vortex. If we had to guess—plot details for the show are being kept under wraps, as usual—we’d expect Key to show up as a genuine character in the world of the Arconia, rather than playing himself; you don’t cast a guy as good at playing weird characters as Key, and then ask him to merely riff on himself like some sort of Sting or Amy Schumer type.

Only Murders reportedly started filming its fifth season this week, with Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin once again reuniting to solve a killing in New York’s most murder-prone apartment building. As per series tradition, the show laid out its next murder victim in the finale of its most recent season, revealing that poor, humble Lester the doorman (Teddy Coluca) will be the stiff in question for season 5.
