The Kid Detective TV show in the works at Hulu

A TV show adaptation of the 2020 mystery comedy-drama film The Kid Detective is in development at Hulu, according to Variety. Evan Morgan, the writer and director of the original R-rated film, will serve as an executive producer. Alex Berger, whose producer credits The Mentalist, Blindspot, Quantum Leap, and CIA, will write and executive produce the adaptation. The logline, shared by Variety, reads: “When a missing persons case reopens the childhood murder he never solved, a washed-up former kid detective gets one last shot at proving his best days aren’t behind him.”

Based on that synopsis, the adaptation appears to be sticking closely to the film’s basic premise, though it’s unclear whether the series will rehash the exact storyline or use the movie as a jumping-off point. The Kid Detective starred Adam Brody as Abe Applebaum, a former child detective in the town of Willowbrook who rose to local fame by solving small cases. Now 32, Abe is haunted by his failure to solve the mysterious disappearance of his friend Gracie and is trying to reclaim his former glory. When a teenager named Caroline (Sophia Nélisse) asks him to investigate the gruesome murder of her boyfriend, Abe sees an opportunity to take on a serious case and prove himself to those who think he’s stuck in the past. According to Variety, Brody isn’t involved in the upcoming TV adaptation—not yet, at least.
