Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Thursday, July 19. All times are Eastern.
Trial & Error (NBC, 9 p.m.): Great news! There’s been another murder! Josh Segal (Nicholas D’Agosto) makes his cheery return to East Peck in tonight’s second-season premiere of Trial & Error to defend the town darling, Lavinia Peck-Foster (Kristin Chenoweth), who has been accused of killing her own husband and stuffing him into a suitcase. As the case opens, expect to see old faces along with the new: Dwayne (Steven Boyer) is his dopey old self, Anne (Sherri Shepherd) reveals a slew of bizarre new maladies, and no-nonsense Carol Anne Keane (Jayma Mays) is carrying a baby along with the interminable weight of being a woman practicing law in a town that still has several so-called “Lady Laws” on the books. Will Harris is on hand for the two-part premiere and ready to put a recap up on the Murder Board. (Murder Board! Murder Board! Murder Board!)
Doctor Who: The Lost Episode (BBC America, 8 p.m.): In 1979, a BBC strike halted production of Doctor Who’s 17th series, leaving its final, Douglas Adams-penned story incomplete. Now, the original footage has been remastered and recut with hand-drawn animation to fill in the visual gaps of episodes where the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) and his companion Romana (Lalla Ward) visit the high-security prison planet of Shada. There they encounter a villainous alien trying to amass criminal knowledge and a retired Time Lord guarding a secret that, in the wrong hands, could mean the end of the universe as we know it.
