But now that you mention it, he thinks Meryl Streep is a great pick for Aslan.

Liam Neeson is only now finding out about Greta Gerwig's Narnia movie

Original Narnia star Liam Neeson is extremely late to the news that a new adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ story is hitting theaters in just three months. “I’m sorry, this is news to me,” Neeson told ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley, who asked for the actor’s thoughts on the trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew and the franchise’s return to the spotlight. Neeson voiced Aslan, the majestic lion often interpreted as an incarnation of Jesus Christ, in three Chronicles Of Narnia films released between 2005 and 2010: The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader. Gerwig’s new film is based on The Magician’s Nephew, the sixth book of seven in Lewis’ series, and features Meryl Streep as the voice of Aslan. “Meryl is playing Jesus Christ?” Neeson asked upon hearing the news for the first time. “Well, if you’re going to make Christ a lady, nobody better than Meryl.”

The Magician’s Nephew, which releases in theaters on February 12 before heading to Netflix on April 2, stars Beatrice Campbell as Polly and David McKenna as Digory, the children at the center of the multiverse-spanning story. The cast also includes Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, and Emma Mackey as the villainous White Witch. In an interview with Empire, Gerwig revealed that David Bowie inspired Aslan’s updated look, and explained the very specific criteria for who should voice Aslan. “I wanted someone who was profound but not pretentious, who had gravitas but not morose self-seriousness. Someone who could communicate depth and pathos as well as joy and delight,” she said. “I wanted someone who was older than 70, so there was a wisdom of experience, but who also had the capacity of fresh wonder, like a child. And also to be one of the greatest actors to ever do it. That list is not a long one.” In the end, Streep fit the bill, and it sounds like she also got Neeson’s seal of approval.
