Demonstrating a supreme show of confidence, Marvel has announced that it is already planning sequels for both Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, taking the gamble that America will continue to be interested in heavily marketed blockbuster movies about famous superheroes. Daring the gods to laugh, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige outlined his long-term plans during an interview with Disney’s quarterly fan club magazine—possibly while pantomiming a dice-throwing, “let it ride” motion—saying that after their upcoming big-screen debuts, Thor would “go off into a new adventure,” while Captain America similarly would “continue to explore the modern world in another film of his own” (having presumably defeated the Nazis—spoiler!).
While one would assume that Marvel might rest there, content in the knowledge that somehow they’d pulled it off, Feige staggered anew out onto the precipice, sounding his barbaric yawp that Marvel, in fact, had “many, many stories to be mined,” including individual films for other superheroes and sexy super-spies such as Black Widow, Hawkeye, S.H.I.E.L.D., and Dr. Strange, as well as tales that would take place in “the world of martial arts, these great cosmic space fantasies, and the magic side of the Marvel Universe.” Speculation that these stories may star popular, attractive actors could not be confirmed at press time, as Feige was last seen challenging all onlookers to join him in a manic, naked run through a lightning storm to see if they were really alive.
