Matt Damon "overthought" Ted and puff-puff-passed on it

Despite finding Seth MacFarlane's Ted one of the funniest scripts he ever read, Damon talked himself out of the Mark Wahlberg role.

Every actor has regrets, roles they turned down for one reason or another. Breckin Meyer has Lord Of The Rings, and Matt Damon has Ted, Seth MacFarlane’s stoner teddy bear movie. Speaking to GQ, Damon explains why he turned down the Mark Wahlberg role as the wise-crack plushie’s beer-swilling straight man: The freakin’ bear’s got all the good lines.

That seems like a given, considering it’s a film about a weed-smoking teddy bear who does dance numbers and stuff. Nevertheless, after enjoying the script enough to take it to dinner where he read “parts of it out to my friends,” Damon says he “got too clever by half.” He continues, “I don’t know what I was thinking. I was like, Well, maybe the teddy bear’s actually the best part.… So I overthought it, and I talked myself out of it. And because it shot in Boston, it would’ve been a chance for me to be home—my father’s passed away now, and I look back, and I go, ‘Man, that would’ve been six months back [home].'”

Damon, who explains in the interview that he turned down the Harvey Dent role in The Dark Knight due to a scheduling snafu, doesn’t “want to live with the regret.” So he’s come to terms with declining the proverbial bong rip from Ted. “The right actor got the part. Mark [Wahlberg’s] great, and the movie’s great, and I wouldn’t have made it any better.”

Maybe he can play AI Bill Clinton in the live-action TV series.
