Matt Reeves still poking along at his uncompleted The Batman 2 script, apparently

Writer-director Reeves is supposedly expected to finish the script for the sequel to his 2022 blockbuster by Memorial Day.

Matt Reeves still poking along at his uncompleted The Batman 2 script, apparently

It’s been more than three years now since Matt Reeves’ noir-ish blockbuster The Batman arrived in theaters—which means it’s been a bit more than three years since Matt Reeves almost certainly knew he was going to be asked to write another one of these things. (Cast members were already locked in for a sequel way back in 2019, and the movie’s box office success—and disconnection from the mess happening over in the DCEU at the time—pretty much cemented a sequel.) Which is why it’s kind of surprising to hear that Reeves, who co-wrote the first film with Peter Craig, hasn’t actually finished the script for the movie, which is currently aiming at a 2027 release date, in all that time.

This is per The Wrap, which tracked comments from multiple people connected to the project, including DC Studios co-head Peter Safran and star Robert Pattinson, to try to figure out where Reeves has actually gotten on the movie in the last three years. (To be fair, he did serve as a producer on two different affiliated programs, the animated Caped Crusader and live-action The Penguin, in that time.) Safran, for instance, noted earlier this year that he hasn’t seen a completed script, although he sounds very enthusiastic for the basic premise that Reeves has cooked up. Which Pattinson makes it sound like he’s only just heard, telling Extra (while promoting Mickey 17 back in February) that “I know what it’s about now. Matt is a very careful writer, but I finally now know what it’s about. It’s very cool and I’m very excited.”

The Wrap also cites an unnamed source that says Reeves “has been sending pages for more than half a year,” and is expected to have the thing put to bed in a couple of weeks. Which is kind of wild when you consider that The Batman Part II was originally scheduled to come out in October of this year, before the 2023 strikes scuppered those plans. Two years from now is a long time, of course, but we’re going to go ahead and assume that The Batman Part II is going to be a pretty complicated movie to film, as it continues to build out its more grounded vision of Gotham City. Thanks to COVID lockdowns, filming for the original movie ran from January 2020 to March of 2021, with about 9 months of that taken up by actual filming, and large amounts of time spent in edits.
