McG will direct ABC Family’s Mortal Instruments series
Last month, ABC Family picked up the rights to Shadowhunters, a TV spinoff/reboot of 2013’s The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones that will almost certainly be referred to as “Game Of Thrones meets some other popular thing” somewhere. City Of Bones was based on the first book in Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments YA fantasy series, and Shadowhunters will start be redoing everything the movie did by adapting that same book for its first season. Now, as reported by Deadline, we know that Terminator Salvation‘s McG will be the one spearheading that re-adaptation when he directs Shadowhunters’ premiere episode.
Shadowhunters will be about 18-year-old Clary Fray (a real name that a person in real life would have) who has a classic coming-of-age moment when she learns that she’s actually a special person with fabulous powers—she’s a Shadowhunter, to be specific. Deadline says that means she’s a “human-angel hybrid” who hunts demons, and also she now lives “among faeries, warlocks, vampires, and werewolves” because Twilight was successful. Now, given that synopsis, it seems clear why McG was chosen to direct this. After all, he already has experience working with human-angel hybrids who hunt demons, only those human-angel hybrids were commanded by a disembodied voice named Charlie and the demons were international criminals. Same basic idea, though.
