The bad news for Twin Peaks fans is that David Lynch is taking his sweet time on the Showtime-bound revival, with recent reports estimating an early 2017 premiere. The good news is that David Lynch is apparently using his influence with the Twin Peaks Chamber of Commerce to attract established actors: Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Naomi Watts and Tom Sizemore are the latest stars to fall in love with the town’s provincial charms and quietly lurking supernatural menace.
Along with the revival’s premium-cable destination, this casting further suggests that this won’t be your parents’ Twin Peaks. Watts’ breakout role was in Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, as an aspiring actress lost in a sexually charged and occasionally violent fugue state. Sizemore hasn’t worked with Lynch before, but he brings a physicality that easily subsumes the combustible temper of Leo Johnson, slovenly lasciviousness of Jacques Renault, and otherworldly dread of killer BOB. Of course, this is David Lynch we’re talking about, so it’s possible that Sizemore might don a wig and cardigan and gently cradle a log for three episodes.
Meanwhile, the same source indicates that Lynch will reprise his role as FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole, teasing a second helping of Twin Peaks’ classic “Cooper and Cole miscommunication” routine. Knowing that Lynch will return in front of the camera to draw out every syllable of “MODUS OPERANDI!” should help reassure longtime fans that some continuity is being preserved.
