A new generation of comics is making its mark on award season. In March, the Golden Globes announced that Nikki Glaser would be coming back for seconds after her successful hosting stint earlier this year. Now, deadpan comedian Nate Bargatze has officially been tapped to make his Emmy hosting debut in September. Aside from Oscar host Conan O’Brien (who’s pretty timeless anyway) that’s essentially a whole new class. Let’s see how long they all stick with the job.

Unlike some past emcees, Bargatze isn’t interested in roasting people or calling celebrities out. “I don’t want your family fighting. There’s plenty of times you’re going to be fighting, so I can be your one hour you don’t fight,” the comedian said of his style in a December New York Times profile. “I think everybody’s a very nice person in the grand scheme of things. I don’t like making people feel dumb and I don’t want to make fun of them. So I’ll be dumb and you can laugh with me or laugh at me.”

Of the new gig, Bargatze commented (per The Hollywood Reporter): “It’s a huge honor to be asked to host such an iconic awards show and I’m beyond excited to work with CBS to create a night that can be enjoyed by families around the world.”

Bargatze has released several specials over the years, including Your Friend, Nate Bargatze (2024), Hello World (2023), and The Greatest Average American (2021). He also has experience hosting both Saturday Night Live and his The Nateland Podcast

Emmys viewership was up 54% for father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy’s turn behind the mic last year, but CBS is likely trying to up those numbers even further this time around. With 1.2 million tickets sold, Bargatze was the highest-earning stand-up comedian in 2024, per THR. That’s a pretty safe bet.

Bargatze will make his hosting debut Sunday, September 14 at 5 p.m. PST on CBS. Nominations will be announced on July 15 at 8:30 a.m. PST.
