Fired Netflix film head Dan Lin reportedly had issues with Greta Gerwig, Ben Affleck

As Netflix continues to clean house—including pretty close to the top of the house—details are starting to emerge about what’s going on behind the scenes. After Netflix fired its former head of film Dan Lin yesterday, Variety published an account of Lin’s firing. The story doesn’t really point to a specific, single reason for the decision, other than it simply wasn’t working and Netflix needed to do something to appease shareholders. But a notable detail from the article is the reported clashes Lin had with a couple of the biggest directors that the streamer was able to woo onto its platform.

First was Ben Affleck, whose film Animals debuted on Netflix earlier this month. The reporting doesn’t go too far into the intricacies of this issue, just that Lin “clashed” with Affleck “over the use of his AI platform InterPositive.” (The report doesn’t go any further or clarify whether the clash was over the use of AI in general or the degree to which it was used.) But Lin’s issue with Greta Gerwig is described as “more consequential,” with Lin taking a “dismissive” attitude about Gerwig’s progress on Narnia during a Zoom call with several other executives. The also-recently-fired Bela Bajaria reached out to Gerwig’s producer to make amends, and Gerwig’s agent Bryan Lourd had words with Ted Sarandos over the exchange. Lin was effectively removed from Narnia after the encounter.

Others in the story don’t dispute the situation, and describe Lin as sometimes too frank but ultimately fair. It’s not clear what will happen to Lin now, but as for who will take his position at Netflix, one source says it’ll “probably” be recently ousted Warner Bros. film heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy. And so it goes.
