Netflix lays off film head Dan Lin

The layoffs at Netflix keep coming. Dan Lin, the head of film, has exited the streamer, Variety reports. Sources told the publication that Lin was laid off at the beginning of the weekend and is expected to address his teams today. Variety added that Netflix is expected to announce Lin’s replacement in the coming days. Lin joined Netflix in April 2024, replacing Scott Stuber as Netflix’s head of film. Former head of content Bela Bajaria apparently helped court him for the role after he spent years building Rideback, the production company behind hits like the Lego movies and Aladdin. Before joining Netflix, he served as the SVP of production for Warner Bros. Pictures. After Netflix hired Lin, he reorganized the film department by genre rather than budget and hoped to produce a wider variety of films with varying budgets. As The New York Times reported in 2024, Lin wanted to improve the streamer’s film quality and make them more cost-effective. According to a 2026 New York Times profile, Lin greenlit 88 movies during his two years at Netflix.

Lin is the latest big-name executive affected by the company’s restructuring, which has laid off about 1,000 employees. Among those impacted was Bajaria, who was credited with overseeing major successes like Squid Game and expanding the streamer’s live programming to include more sports events. Bajaria will be replaced by former Disney TV exec and Fox Searchlight head Peter Rice. According to a memo obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix’s simple mission, “to entertain the world,” is an ambitious—and apparently expensive—goal. And though co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters insisted that the business is “strong and growing,” the sheer number of recent layoffs, particularly of people in high positions in the company, suggests that Netflix’s lofty goal requires big cuts.
