Netflix seeking newly-slim singles for Weight To Date show

Years ago, Netflix debuted Insatiable, a dramedy that followed a newly-thin teenager who takes revenge on those who bullied her when she was fat. That show was exceptionally poorly received (though its issues went far beyond the weight-loss plotline) but it bears at least a passing resemblance to the new reality show Netflix has just announced. Get ready for Weight To Date, which is either a docuseries or a reality show focused on people who have recently lost weight.

Other shows that this immediately brought to mind are Bridalplasty or The Swan, but Variety‘s reporting suggests that the show will be closer to Love On The Spectrum than either of those (or to Love Island or Biggest Loser, for that matter). For one, the show doesn’t seem like it will be focused on documenting the transformation itself, but rather on how people’s lives have been affected after already losing the weight. The production company is currently “individuals who are ready to date after having a major weight loss.” A synopsis continues, “This new inspiring dating series will highlight the journeys of selected singles who are now discovering what dating is like after a major body transformation.”

Of course, the way we talk (or don’t talk) about weight and weight loss has changed a bit since the days of Insatiable or The Biggest Loser, thanks in large part to proliferation of GLP-1s. The phenomenon of people suddenly appearing much thinner than they did months prior has been fairly widely documented and discoursed, and while Netflix’s press release doesn’t namecheck Ozempic or any other GLP, it’s hard not to think that drugs like these might play a part in the experiences of some contestants on Weight To Date.
